“...I
was shocked at what I heard the first
time I put up the CV-28. I was recording
George Doering and his army of acoustic
guitars. My usual choices for these
sessions are my Neumann KM-54 and my
Royer 121 active ribbon mic. The CV-28
had just been delivered that afternoon,
so we decided to put it up right next to
the KM-54. I initially plugged both mics
into two channels of my Millenia mic
pre, but at first listen I thought it
was a little too open and switched to a
pair of API pres. Amazing! At first, it
was extremely difficult to hear a
difference between the Neumann and the
CV-28. After a few minutes of listening,
it felt like the Neumann was just
slightly more refined, but not so much
that I preferred it to the CV-28
(remember that I'm comparing the 28 to
one of the all-time great mics here!).
Rather than make a decision right there,
I just recorded both mics. When it came
time to mix, I was pleasantly surprised
to find that the CV-28 often times
worked better than the Neumann...Well
